Can high radon levels increase seizure activity or other nerological problems?!

Question:

Can high radon levels increase seizure activity or other nerological problems?

I am getting ready to move into a home with a 5.5 radon level. I know the cancer danger. I am concerned about neurological problems.

Answers:

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a physician. I am a licensed environmental engineer and a NEHA certified radon measurement technician as well.

Radon is a leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. As such, the cancer occurs because there is a pathway for the radon particle to travel from the outside air to your lung tissue (every breath in can transport the radon particles). Unless I'm mistaken, there is no direct pathway for these particles to enter into your nervous system or brain to effect neurological problems.

EPA recommends you remediate at levels above 4.0 pCu/L. You are close enough to that limit where I would recommend you have a long-term test done, or at least a confirmation of a short term test. If you have more questions, email me at paul.olsen@honorbuilders.com
