Vitamin B12 absorbtion into blood stream?!

Question:

Vitamin B12 absorbtion into blood stream?

I've read that shots are the best, then the patch, then under the tonque or sprays. Can you put a regular tablet in your mouth and let it dissolve? Will a larger % be absorbed this way over swallowing?

Answers:

You are correct---shots are the best when it comes to making sure your body will have the most B12 providable. (The concern about shots, is there is a possiblilty of infection which one could develope at the injection site.)
Sublingual B12, in either losenger or spray, is also good for quick absorbtion under the tongue, where there is a vast supply of blood vessels near the surface, which aids in easier absorbtion into the blood stream and tissues (therefore bipassing the digestive system).
Putting a relgular B12 tablet under your tongue is not advisable, since it would be made of different binders and other pill forming ingredients, therefore it could cause irritation to your sensitive mucous membranes under the tongue, and definately not be absorbed as well...if any. Even if some were to be absorbed, it would take so much longer, and by then, irritation would set in.
Your question that if a larger % would be absorbed by putting a regular B12 under you tongue, versous swallowing it is dependent on whether you have the intrinsic factor in your small intestine to absorbe and assimilate the B12 pill once you swallow it. Some people do not have the intrinsic factor necessary to assimilate B12 in the digestive system due to a few things: 1.) Perniscous Anemia-- a hereditary auto- immune dissorder... or/and along, with having a positive ANA lab test, along with having a positive lab test for anti-parietal cells... 2.) Gastritis-- which could errode away the linning of the stomach, and thus destroy the parietal cells on the linning, which actually produce the intrinsic factor that is needed to absorb B12 in the small intestine.
3.) and... gastric bypass surgery, along with some other G.I. surgeries, which affect the stomach, and the first 1/3 part of the small intestine.
So, as you can see, your question was important, and having sufficient B12 in your body is very important for many functions. If you need to take B12 sublingually, or in shot form---then remember that it comes in two forms: Cyanocobalamine, and Methylcobalamine. Some people strongly feel that the 2nd is the better choice, although only available in sublingual form in the USA (and in shot form---refridgerated--from Europe....last I heard---but you might want to check it out.)
