Which is better for sleep, Tryptophan/5HTP or Chamomile?!

Question:

Which is better for sleep, Tryptophan/5HTP or Chamomile?

Answers:

Alone, take the chamomile. Heres why:
Chamomile is safe. Its also helps for your digestive tract and potentially helps your immune system. It relaxes you, and relieves anxiety. If your healthy, aside from your sleep problem, chamomile is very effective in helping you sleep. It is known for its ability to do so. Also you can drink it every night and can't overuse it.

5-HTP is your body's precursor to serotonin, and promotes serotonin production in your brain. It is also known to promote melatonin production as well. However this does not mean that taking a 5-HTP supplement will help you sleep. Production of these chemicals already exist in your body, and you probably already have plenty of serotonin/melatonin in your brain. It is the release of the chemicals to their receptors in your brain that makes them effective, which is how many anti-depressants and sleeping medications work. In other words-just because you have these chemicals, doesn't mean your using them. Also your body tends to flush a lot of the pill away anyways. It needs other vitamins (like b12) to be turned into chemicals your brain will use. No one is really sure if 5-HTP helps insomnia at all. Plus, there is a small risk with taking large, or extended doses of 5-HTP. Serotonin Syndrome is a rare, dangerous, and potentially fatal condition.

If your confused, or still can't decide, check out the links in my sources, and do some googling on chamomile. If all else fails trial and error is definitely and option here.

P.S. As far as taking melatonin, it helps sleep. This a good short term solution. However, taking melatonin frequently, isn't that healthy, as it has been known to shut down your bodies independant production of melatonin, because its relying on the supplement for the chemical. This can cause sleep problems when you don't take it.
