Answers:

"Withdrawal" is a term used to describe the actions the body takes during its detoxification and regulation process.

Any time mood altering substances are introduced into the body, it adjusts itself to function normally while the substance is in the system. It is the natural adaptation process. Now, when the substance is suddenly absent from the body, it throws off the process cycle. Instead of a system free of the third party chemical being "the norm", it has become normal to have it around. So the body goes through a process of readjusting itself to cope with the substance not present. Usually this is displayed in a psychologically and/or physically painful manner.

There are only a few substances in which withdrawal effects can be fatal.

The most common is alcohol. The body becomes so dependent on alcohol after it has been introduced over a LONG period of time, that when it is removed the system fails. Delerium tremens are common, followed by heart failure.

Heroin (diacetylmorphine) is another substance in which the withdrawals have known to have been deadly. It doesn't happen often, but it has been reported.

The last one is gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). Withdrawals from this chemical must be monitored by a doctor because they are excruciatingly painful - violent seizures being one of the effects.

Usually, anti-convulsants are the primary initial treatment for any medically supervised withdrawals from physically addicting substances. With opiates like heroin (diacetylmorphine), a drug called methadone may be used to wean the patient off of their addiction. Methadone is a semi-synthetic opioid, but not as powerful as heroin itself. It is administered so as the patient does not end up "quitting cold turkey" - because this is when the strongest and most painful withdrawal effects occur.

Hope this helps you :)
