Undergraduate major for Pharamacist ???!

Question:

Undergraduate major for Pharamacist ???

I have a family member who would like to become a pharmacist but she doesn't know what she should major in. I told her MD's usually have an undergraduate degree of biology, chemistry, or biochemistry. Do prospective pharmacists major in the same areas?

Answers:

Pharmacy majors don't typically need an undergrad degree... I was admitted directly into the Pharm.D program at my university and started taking pharmacy classes on my first day of college. At other universities, you need to do undergrad study for 2 years, and then apply to the pharamcy program, but even at these schools, there is a "pre-pharamcy" curriculum, so you don't necessarily need to pick a major other than pharmacy. If he or she plans on going to one college to get an undergrad degree and then transferring somewhere else to get the doctor of pharmacy (which is tough- transferring that is), I would recommend biochemistry. Without taking any "extra" classes, as a pharmacy major I'm just a few classes away from getting a biochem minor. In any case, your family member should talk to the dean of the college of pharmacy (or the admissions people) at the univeristy they plan to attend to see what would be best.
