Question:
What are my options for sciatic treatme? How does that treatment work, and how do doctor's treat the sciatica?
Answers:
Sciatica, or painful inflammation of the sciatic nerve, can be an extremely painful and recurrent condition. Cold packs to the buttock area can help ease some of the discomfort. Anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen or naproxen are frequently given but have little efficacy for most people. Narcotic analgesics may help more, but many physicians are hesitant to use them because of the possibility of abuse. Probably the best treatment is a steroid injection or steroid tablets by mouth. Steroids are potent anti-inflammatories that will help with the pain of sciatica, but ultimately the condition is something that must be healed by the body. Because of this, rest is necessary for the condition to improve.
