Always see a Doctor first, one who specializes in nerve disorders, typically a physical/sports medicine Doctor or a Neurologist, or both. Sciatic pain ( if it is temporary ) almost always responds to rest, lots of it. If the pain is chronic, physical therapy can offer 2 answers. Diagnosis and/or treatment. Through manipulation of the muscles, the sciatic nerve can be freed from surrounding inflammation of the tissues. If muscle manipulation doesn't work, then the condition is usually chronic. A good diagnostician can determine this with physical therapy. In any event, it's nothing to take lightly. Rest until you can see a Doctor is the safest way. Walking, standing etc. will aggravate the condition and usually cause more pain, as well as possibly causing nerve damage. There are many causes for sciatica, so finding the cause is key. Among the causes are injury, disc problems in the back, even infection. The Doc should order a CT scan of the lumbar spine, with and without contrast. My advice is based on my own experience.
