Neti Pot Question: If I pour the water in, and it doesn't come out, where is it going? Should I worry?

I am new to using a Neti pot. A friend suggested it. I have a bad sinus and lung infection and a chronic problem with sinus and lung infections. Sometimes, I pour the water in and it comes out the other nostril like it's supposed to.

But other times, it just keeps going in...and not coming out.

Not specific to any one nostril. After, I feel clearer but lots of pressure on the sinuses.

So...

1) Where is the water actually going?

2) Should I worry?

Answers:

I use these regularly and frequently not all the water I pour in comes out the other side.

Usually it drains down the back of your throat, although if you aren't tasting it or feeling it, chances are its simply circulating in your sinuses.

One thing though, be careful when you use the pot not to blow too hard after you successfully irrigate! Blowing too hard can force the remaining water deeper into your sinuses, which can irritate your eustachian tubes.

Here is a page with numbered instructions if you are new to using them:

Also, here is a list of for troubleshooting common problems (such as H2O not draining!) from the same site:

Neti pots are very safe and work wonders if used as they are meant to be.
