i heard that doctors can either 'knock you out' with pills rather than shots and masks. how does this work?

"knocked out" can be used very broadly..
It depends on what the procedure entails... If you are having surgery, usually general anestesia is used and you are put ASLEEP, they do that by giving you an IV and putting meds in thru there...
There is also a new procedure called a block where they basically stick you with this metal needle..which is hooked up to a machine but somehow reacts with the muscles completely putting that part of the body asleep, however you are mostly awake... now..getting to the pills, if you need a procedure involving being put tosleep there not going to offer a pill, the only pills are for minor procedures in which case they may give you some valume to help anxiety and relax.
