I read several sites that recommended painting Iodine on your wrists and within 6 or 7 hours the sore throat starts to go away.

Iodine? I've never heard of using it for a sore throat. Yes, it loses potency after its stored for a while. Germs will also grow in it.
You can gargle with hydrogen peroxide (don't swallow it).
