I just found out that my insurance company covers Oriental med. They also say they cover acupuncture, so I assumed it was different.

Answers:

Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM is not just another medical modality. It is also a philosophy. A trained practitioner will take your pulse, and look at your tongue. They may ask for some information, and then are able to tell a great deal about your self. If you ever have this done you may be surprised with what they are able to say about you.
If a therapy is given, it is designed for you. That is, even if you have the same condition as someone else, a different therapy may be recommended. They use terms like yin (female) yang (male), hot, cold, wet, dry. They see your body as an entire system and the goal is balance. The kidneys are an important organ in this system, as is the liver.
Besides accupuncture or energy work, herbs can also be recommended.
A 'prescription' usually consists of a combination of herbs, simmered into a tea. It is not usually that um, yummy. The herbs are made from, leaves, roots, bark and all kinds of things. A trip to a chinese health store is a facinating experience.
This is a topic that you can spend a great deal of time exploring.
Personally, I have received benefit from this system. As have some of the people I know.
