I met with this plastic surgeon that has been in the business for 30 years, and seemed like he knew his stuff. I felt confident in him. But after doing some research I noticed he wasnt a memeber of the ASPS...

NO - it means he didn't pay any dues to belong to an organization that he can say he belongs to for no really good reason. His work should speak of itself. Ask to speak with current and former clients.
