Magnesium Benefits?!

Question:

Magnesium Benefits?

I bought a bottle of Tension RX at the health food store, for tension/anxiety. I haven't found it helpful at all. It contains B-6 100mg. and Magnesium 116 mg., Hops Extract 100mg. Anyone familiar with what these ingredients are good for?

Answers:

Magnesium is known as the antistress mineral. It is essential for effective nerve and muscle funtioning. Itis also important for converting blood sugar into energy. Magnesium is necessary for calcium and vitamin C metabolism, as well as that of phosphorus, sodium and potassium.

Daily recommended intake for Magnesium for adults is 250 - 500mg.

Benefits of magnesium supplementation are:

Aid in fighting depression;
Promote a healthier cardiovascular system and help prevent heart attacks;
Keep teeth healthier;
Help prevent calcium deposits, kidney and gallstones;
Bring relief from indigestion;
Combined with calcium can work as a natural tranquilizer.

Best natural sources for magnesium are unmilled grains, figs, almonds, nuts, seeds, dark green vegeies and bananas.

Women who are on the pill or taking estrogen in any form would be well advised to eat more magnesium rich foods. (Keep in mind that meat, fish and dairy products are relatively poor sources.)

Vitamin B6 is necessary for the production of hydrochloric acid and magnesium. It will strengthen the immune system and generally works synergistically with the other B vitamins.

In my opinion, you would be far better getting yourself a multivitamin B complex supplement from the chemist. Just ask the pharmacist for advice on which brand is a good quality one to buy. Avoid synthetic vitamins, very hard to digest. In times of stress, we need to increase our intake of the B group of vitamins to relieve symptoms such as fatigue, exhaustion, tension, nervousness, heart palpitations, head and hand sweating, grainy feeling eyes, sore lips, mouth and tongue, cracked skin around the fingernails, irritability and moodiness.

As far as the magnesium goes, just increase your intake of magnesium rich foods. I find watermelon is a great way to do that, plus its really yummy.
