Can infants (12months +) show signs of depression?!

Question: just curious, if even infants can get depressed?
thanks!

I have taken two Psychology courses in the past semesters. There had been no mention of infants showing signs of depression. According to author Janet Belsky every serious psychological disorder has a typical age of onset either in the late teens or early twenties. She related the case of her colleague and his wife both of whom have suffered from serious mood disorders. Their children were all successful, well adjusted, and happy throughout elementary school. But when they became older teenagers, their family history of depression kicked in and each child developed symptoms of it.

I have never heard of it yet. If they show lack of initiation or warmth with other human beings I think it can be more like a sign of possible autism than depression.

I very much doubt it. Only laziness and self harm ( head banging) if they are being abused or malnourished or not treat properly.
Or if they have a mental disorder.

They can show signs but their brains aren't developed enough to even realize that they are depressed. Don't automatically think that a baby is depressed because it seems moody and tired, because that might just be the problem, they are moody and tired.

I doubt it...they haven't even experienced the full range of emotion yet.....

i have a an 11 month old and i dont know if they can be depressed but my baby shows obvious signs of sadness at certain times that i might mistake for depression, keep in mind that infants mimik what they see and they are just learning about expressions by reading others faces, but on the other hand mothers know best and if you feel your child is depressed take him to the doctor. :)

No i don't think so.
