You're thinking of compulsive behaviour.
It's a symptom, usually, of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, wherein a person feels compelled to behave in a certain way due to an obsession on their part.
It's often triggered by a traumatic event or experience, and the compulsion is usually associated with that. For example, someone who was attacked at their front door might treble or quadruple check their door locks once an hour, or something like that.
Left unchecked it can totally debilitate a person.
