Are you more depressed bcause of the holidays?!

Question: I am very sad and depressed right now because my family situation is very, very difficult. But yes, the holidays are difficult a lot of the time for me. I'm usually the type of person that loves the holidays--the whole kit and kaboodle (the gift shopping, decorating, card writing, baking, etc.). But other years, I just wish they would go away.

I think the holidays are difficult for a lot of people. A lot of time all kinds of losses are brought up. And people think that everybody else's family situation is the way the media portrays it--warm, loving, giving. Most of the time our family situations are not like that at all and there is a lot of arguing, tensions, and sad feelings. Sometimes I just try to get through them, like this year.

people dont get depressed because of the holidays themselves.. usually it's the weather, being alone on the holidays, or just having a depression already and then seeing everyone have so much fun making them feel inadequate.

holidays bring memories of better Xmas past. I remember my greatest memories are when my kids were small and how impressed they got with presents. Now that I am older and have less family members to celebrate with I get really misty eyes.

It has been proven that the hollidays are one of the most stressing period of the year.
You mention a family member that has passed in december, but I think we miss all of the people that have passed that we love, whether it has been a month, a year or ten years since that person has gone. Since this is a time of family gathering, we miss our loved ones.
The gift giving is a great joy, but it is also a great stressor: Will they like what I bought? What if someone else bought the same item? What if the gift I wanted to purchase is out of stock? The expenses of xmas are also a great financial burden and it is known that the after holiday period is the period in which most bankrupcies are filed.
The family gathering.... ah fond memories they say... The drunk uncle, granpa that says inappropriate jokes, the cousins that can't stop touching each other... And it always ends up in a huge family feud in which most of the members of the family don't talk to one another for months at the time. (I may be exaggerating, but those kind of things do happen) As I heard on tv the other day, "hollidays is a time of the year when too many people who don't know each other all that much are gathered in a space much too small for way too long" (quote from Dr Phil's show)
Personnally, I avoid holliday celebrations at all costs. I usually manage to work during the whole holliday period and my excuse is that I need money and since school is off during hollidays, it is the best time for me to make extra money (which is not lying, it is true too and no one can argue about that) Hollidays remind me of chaos, screaming children running everywhere, the adults not paying attention to the kids and always ended up nasty. So yes, my heart does not rejoice when the hollidays come by. The only reasons to celebrate are the time off school and the discount on boxing day (although it is too crouded for me) =0)
Happy hollidays to you all and enjoy it if you can.

i feel more depressed during the hols coz i enjoy school and i dnt get to c my friends in the hols. but not because of the hols themselves coz sometimes it is gd to hav a break. especially when u got GCSE's to wrry bout!! =s
