Stressed 18 yr old --Tips for sleeping?!

Question: Hi there, I'm 18
have gone through a difficult semester at school
Too many courses combined with part-time job
and guys screwing with my head as well

I have trouble falling asleep because so much is on my mind... mainly I'm stressed about my school work... but I know being tired from not sleeping only hurts it more

What are you're tips for getting a better sleep at night?

I often wake up at 6 am and then can't fall asleep again until I hear my alarm... and I'm exhausted

I just took a bath

First, you need to stop using the "STRESS" word. Stress can be positive, as it makes us compete and prepare, but society thinks its some kind of evil that has power over them. Did you do your best? Will life go on even if you fail in a class? YES - so, where's the stress.

Stop claiming to be "so stressed" and you won't be stressed. Really.

don't eat or drink anythingwith caffiene a few hours before you sleep. don't exersice or do anything to raise your heartbeat before you sleep. make yourself some tea and put on relaxing music.

Set a routine bedtime for yourself. Going to bed at the same time every night sends signals to the brain that it is time to sleep.

Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol in the evening as they can delay your sleep. Alcohol will allow you to sleep early on but it will awaken you later in the night.

Exercising regularly also helps but try not to exercise before bedtime. Evening exercise should be calm, such as yoga or meditation with deep breathing.

ake a good look at your sleep environment. It should be pleasant and comfortable to you. There should be no distractions such as a television or radio. Keep office work brought home, bills to pay or jobs you want to complete out of the bedroom as they can cause stress just by looking at them.

If you have trouble sleeping, try not to take a nap in the middle of the day. Only your body knows how much sleep it needs and if you sleep during the day, your body won't require much more at night.

Take a warm, calming bath. Avoid bright lights. Clear your mind of the problems you encountered during the day. Think only of the good things in your life and memories that make you happy.

Or you could drink warm milk.It works for me. :)

I realise this is weird, but my friend who does psychology at my uni told me about a woman who said the word "the" over and over again and apparently it helped her fall asleep!

Don't concentrate on saying it...just say it!
I really don't know if it works, but hey its worth a shot :)
Hope you have a good nights sleep tonight :)

1) Do not eat right before bed
2) Try buying Melatonin or L-Tryptophan from the pharmacy or a supplement store and take it before bed to help you balance your sleep cycle
3) Keep your room dark at night
4) Exercise in the evening
5) Do not nap
6) and do not keep the tv or computer in your room if you can; keep the room only for rest and sleep-

i like all the things that victoria said. especially about working out at night. when i work out in the evening i sleep like a baby. melatonin works too but it's not something you want to depend on forever. i sometimes can't sleep for the same reason. namely, there's just too many things racing through my head. a buddy of mine taught me to focus on my breathing pattern. it sounds kind of strange, but it works. basically, while you are lying in bed think about nothing but the rhythm of your own breathing. the idea is that it takes your mind off all the things that are stressing you out. also, you have to tell yourself that there's only so much you can accomplish in a day. "worrying is like a rocking chair. it'll give you something to do but it won't get you anywhere"
