How can I get samples for prescriptions that have been abruptly discontinued?!

Question: I had a prescription to Zoloft which was inexplicably "discontinued" (perhaps retroactively). Now I can't function because I'm suffering from withdrawal. Is there anyway I can get samples or a temporary advance in a timely manner?

Thanks.

Some drugstores that have a record of long-term use of a medication will provide a three-day supply if you explain the situation, especially if you tell them that you are in danger of suicidal thoughts if you do not get your medication. If your regular drugstore will not do this for you, a trip to an emergency room will take care of it. Be prepared to spend at least three hours. Try to find the emergency room in your area that is the least busy. No one gives out 'samples' of Zoloft because it is supposed to work on a long-term basis.

Alternatively - I know that what you are going through is hard. I've been through withdrawal with a lot of medications, and I know it's tough. BUT... I've been off medication for a year now, after being on it for more than five years, and I'm happier now than I've ever been. It feels really good to be myself. I've been using a new therapy called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (developed by Marsha Linehan). It's completely different from traditional therapy or self-help books. As bad as you feel now, it may be worth it to stick it out through the withdrawals and try something new.

*Edit* Tips for stopping cold turkey:

Tell your friends and family. They'll help.
Treat yourself to luxuries every day. Hot bath, coffee, teddy bear, carry a rose with you all day to smell, find the lyrics of a song you've always wanted to learn and make yourself sing them at the bus stop, print out a copy of your favorite picture and look at it when you feel down.
Believe in yourself. I know it seems hard, but it's nothing more than saying, "I've made it this far and I've done some pretty cool stuff in life. I know that I can do this."
Breathe deeply. Focusing on your breath can make pretty much anything bearable.

You need to work this one out with the physician who prescribed the Zoloft to you.
There are other medications that you can take to ease they symptoms of withdrawl.
But you have to follow directions for this to work.
Talk to your mental health provider and your physician.
Good luck.

Once you are finished your "samples" you cannot just get more. You need to go to your Dr and find out if he is able to perscribe you the perscription so you can take it longer if needed. If you had a perscription and you waited too long to fill it, you will need to return to your Dr so he can renew your perscription...again, only if you need it!

No, you can't get ZOLOFT (the brand) but you might be able to get a generic brand. If not, andy of the SSRI medications will work for you- try Paxil or Prozac. Good luck.
