My sister goes through her sister in laws garbage bin?!

Question: My sister told me that she is obsessed with her sister-in-law and her family. Not in an attraction way - she said that they have a pretty perfect life and she would like to have a life like theirs. So, she tries to work out what sort of people they are - what foods they eat and what products they by.
She told me she goes through their garbage bin at night when they put it outside for collection.
She is suffering from depression.
Is this a serious illness?
Should she seek help and why is she doing it?

Yes, I think she needs help. Yes, depression is a serious illness.
And I have no idea why she wants to be somebody else with a different life so desperately. Somehow it makes me think things must be pretty rough in her life somehow, and that she has no other coping mechanism she can use.

Yes. Your sister needs help. First of all, unless her sister-in-law is going around digging through peoples trash, your sister is not going to be like her.

yes i would say she is,,
i would get her help fast,,

Yeah, I'd say your sister is a little on the wacky side. If she wanted to know about the stuff they buy and things they do, it would make more sense to just ask them. She really should seek some professional therapeutic help, because she's on a downward slide with the depression.

She has to stop. She needs to stop worrying about them and start loving herself and worrying about herself. There's a saying that goes something like, "Be true to yourself. Do what you love and you will find someone else who loves the same thing!" She should turn her focus inward, and quit worrying about others. She can't compare her life to theirs, because she isn't them. She has to find her own way.

very unusual behaviour that's for certain.

yes depression can be very serious. (i have it).

going through their garbage because she's obsessed with them, could be an indication of another illness.

she needs to see a psychologist/psychiatrist and find out the underlying cause. If she's not happy with her life, hopefully some therapy can help her to change it.

If you said she is suffering from depression, does that mean she is already diagnosed by a doctor with that disorder? If not well I think she should really see a psychiatrist that could help her anxiety. Digging in other people's trash at night is NOT normal but I think this is treatable.
