Are there any antidepressants approved for teens?!

Question: I think the question speaks for itself..

Answers: I think the question speaks for itself..

Yes.
Prozac is considered "safe," as is Zoloft.
The reason that certain antidepressants aren't considered safe is because of the risk of an increase in suicidal thoughts/suicide attempts. However, a study done by the Journal of the American Medical Association found than this occurred in only .7% of teens--not as big a number as most people think.
It's important to know, though, that just because there is a "black box" warning does NOT mean that teens shouldn't be prescribed certain medications--drug companies put those warnings on mainly to protect themselves from lawsuits.
Every person is different. When I was 16 and very depressed, I was put on Zoloft--considered "safe" for teens--and became more suicidal than I already was. Then I was put on Effexor and that worked for me.
So don't really believe completely in those warnings. If you (or your kid) needs an antidepressant, take what WORKS. And watch yourself or them for signs of worsening symptoms.

Yes, there are many, depending on what is causing the depression.

They are all prescription-only.

Yes, but there are better ways. The anti-depressants approved for teens have a mixed history.
The best anti-depressant mix for teens is this:
1. goal-setting (with a neutral but enthusiastic third party rather than parents, but not just other teens)
2. Structured exercise: this has been clearly shown to reduce depressive tendencies; it is not a cure for clinical depression, but is a good tool for mild depression
3. Involvement with the less-fortunate...this always helps.

good luck

There are some antidepressants but I don't know if they are specifically for teens.
They are by perscription from a doctor.
If you are depressed you also need to go to a counselor, their work with you is just as important or more important as medication.
When my daughter was 17 she had depression and took Lexapro and counseling.

Absolutely. When I was in high school, quite a few of my peers were on antidepressants of several sorts at one time or another. Get in touch with a psychiatrist to see what medication would most likely work best for you.

Don't get upset or concerned if a certain medication doesn't work for you, by the way. Every individual responds to these medications differently, so if one type doesn't agree with you, there's another one out there that probably will. I've been on Lexapro for just over a month and it's been great, now that it's finally kicked in all the way.

Good luck, talk to your psychiatrist and see what they suggest.

im 14 and have taken prozac and im taking now zoloft
