Is threatening or asking how to commit suicide a violation of Yahoo! Answers Gui!

Question: I run across such questions in the most unexpected categories. I refer them to the Boys Town National Hotline: 1-800-448-3000; www.boystown.org/hotline, but I fear that some smartass answer on here could push someone over the edge. Just curious how others handle such posts.

I believe if they are asking for help not to commit suicide and need help in that area or they are threatening to do it need all the help we can give them. I lost my husband to suicide and I give suicide hot lines to help prevent them from doing it and people to talk too and I see nothing wrong with that.

But the idiots that tell them how and are disrespectful and don't understand how serious this is should be reported.
Yes, they could push someone over the edge, subjects like theirs need really sincere answers. The one you have is a good one too. Thanks===

I think it is against the guidelines. Usually those questions get deleted.

read the guidelines and if they fall outside of those report them and in the meantime just keep giving the # you've been giving just in case they are valid and need real help.

Not only is it a violation it is morally wrong. Hopefully nobody would be sick enough to advise on how to commit suicide. I would personally steer clear of any questions with such content.

The only answer I would give would be to contact one's LOCAL suicide prevention hotline. Boys Town may not be the best option for them --- by it's nature, Boys Town is not geared toward adults, so it's kind of exclusionary. That's why referring them to their local suicide prevention hotline is a better option --- its inclusive of everyone regardless of age or gender.

So I guess we should all worry and live in fear. What about all the majority of helpful responses? All you focus on is the negative response from one or two. What about the 15 good helpful ones. Get with life, it is dangerous.

Besides, why would you want to punish those who need to ask such a question by banning their cry for help?

Also, not everyone wants to talk to some "hot-line". There are those of us who just want a real person to give a real response... not some canned psychological lingo from someone who is just doing a job.

You might be the one needing help along those lines someday. If someone writes about it, we should take it as if it were real. Today people are very depressed and need help, what better way to get help like a place where you can write and ask for help from total strangers, you might say what they need to hear and save a life today.

Most ethical companies report suicide threats to the individual's ISP (Internet Service Provider) and they are supposed to notify the local authorities. Some areas have made this the law, and other areas have not seen the need to pass legislation as of yet.

Thank Goodness I have never come across one.

I'd hate to feel guilty about not being able to help.

Promoting your hotline is also a violation. Let the mentally ill vent in this section if they want.
