Wellbutrin for anxiety and night terrors?!
Question: Okay so I went to the pschiatrist yesterday and she prescribed Wellbutrin and Xanax as needed. I took Well I took prozac for awhile but broke out in a rash and gained 12 lbs. so she said that this should counteract the weight gain.
I am concerned abou the uncertainty behind this drug. Does it work for anxiety...I'm not depressed and does it have many side effects I may not be able to get rid of...I'm kind of scared about that...

Wellbutrin seems like a strange choice if it's primarily for anxiety. In my personal experience, Wellbutrin worked in boosting my energy (it has a stimulating effect) and controlling bad habits (it's marketed for quitting smoking under the name Zyban, too)... BUT one of the major side effects that I had for the first couple of months was bouts of bad anxiety. My heart would race and I would get dizzy... and when you're used to having anxiety attacks, it's easy to confuse what's really going on in your body and mind.
I'm also a little confused about the night terrors part because Wellbutrin has that stimulating effect, which in many people can cause insomnia and sleep disturbances. But, I've never read about it's use with night terrors, so that's just my uninformed opinion.
It almost seems as though she prescribed the Wellbutrin mainly for the possibility of weight loss and appetite suppression (that's one of the side effects, but I should warn you... it doesn't last). The xanax should help during bad times of anxiety, but I've also had bad experiences with taking benzodiazepines (xanax, valium, ativan, etc.) for anxiety... you can build a tolerance, and sometimes after the calming effects wear off, you will get a rebound effect of actually feeling more agitated.
Are you in psychotherapy or addressing the reasons behind the anxiety? If your doctor is just medicating and not addressing the root of the issue, you need a new doctor.
The only possible way that I could see Wellbutrin being prescribed for anxiety, is if the anxiety is due to obsessions and compulsions, because it does help with controlling those behaviors and thoughts...
Maybe she has good reasons for prescribing what she did... I don't know the whole story... but it does seem kind of weird based on what you've told us here. If you are uncomfortable with her decisions, you should bring it up with her, or consider switching to a different Dr.

welbutrin is useless in my opinion for anything... xanax is your ticket to the anxiety ... screw welbutrin its like taking an antihistamine for an allergy over the counter... im just sayin cause i tried it and xanax it definetly works... however be careful with it ,it can be very addictive and I am not on anything now but will be when i see my doc in january and it won'tbe welbutrin ...
omg .. i have some major night terrors i go fucken crazy in my sleep , run , scream , fight , cry ....should i tell my doctor .. i think i will .. thanks lol
