Can a Bipolar person quit smoking?!

Question: My brother has Bipolar, Anxiety disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive disorder. I also suffer from these disorders, I thought I would mention that because I feel I understand my brother more than anyone else. He desperately wants to quit smoking. He has to be in a certain "mood" to quit. The longest he has quit is two days, then his mood changes and he still cares but he is weak. He is on a lot of medications so he is not able to take prescription quit smoking aids. To make matters worse his wife is a chain smoker so he is around it and has constant access to cigarettes. I believe it is not just a nicotine addiction but also force of habit.

I supposedly have Bipolar and am on a lot of medications. I was taking Chantix and it helped a lot. But then I decided that quitting smoking was not what I wanted to do right away, so I stopped the chantix. I believe it is possible because I quit for a year one time.

Yes he can but not likely.

wow that is very interesting. i think a specialist would be best at kicking the addiction because these are special circumstances. good luck to your brother

Yes they can!!!

i wish him luck.

yes he can he just needs to want it. all the excuses in the world won't change that.

My brother is bipolar too and quit smoking six weeks ago. He takes medication for his bipolar condition and had one treatment of laser eye surgery for the smoking. Yes there are mood swings.....that's from not only not smoking but the bipolar. It's not easy but it can be done. I guess you have to want to just like with anything else.

To quit smoking is very hard despite the obstacles. I believe anyone can quit if they want to and have help of some sort. He has the odds stacked against him. I quit and my wife still smokes. It's been about 4 years and I still get urges.

I live with someone who has bipolar and they have problems making up their mind if they want a tea or a coffee before the kettle boils.
Sorry I don't fancy your Brother's chances of quitting not without medical help.
Good Luck

In this case unless his mood swinging is properly treated, I mean, his obsessive compulsivity & mood disorder is not controlled or he becomes symptom free, its difficult for him to quit smoking. His wife is here becomes a precipitating factor as she herself is a chain smoker. You all along with medicines you are taking, need family therapy by a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist. Please try.
