What do you define as an addiction?!

Question: I've been to alcohol and drug treatment this past year. I do not want answers telling me that only you can say you are an alcoholic. I have been through that many times. I consider myself and will always be a addict. I am just curious to know what you people think

I was an alcholic then a pill popper and finaly ended up on crack. It progressed as time went on. one drugged led to another. in my opinion an addict is some who has lost control of how much and how often they use, or if the use desrupts or hinders their life in ANY way then they need to quit the use. If you can't quit the use very easily ,or you keep going back to it, then you could most likly be an addict. To what degree I don't know. There are different degrees of addiction. It progresses the longer you use. It's in the brain. Quit while you are ahead. I went from being raised in a well to do family, values, morals, having kids of my own, to a crack head. I won't mention the depths that the addiction took me. i tried everything to quit
I agonized over it every day. I was bound. it totally ruined ten or more years of my life. So, i would say if a person suspects he has a tendency or might be a borderline addict. quit now, never to return. It's not worth it to carry on. It gets harder as time passes. i was just a binge drinker. On again off again. But addiction still managed to have it's way with me in the end, and cause me to lose everything. I suggest an inpatient rehab. Two months mininum. if you can't afford it go to the county for help. I can't emphasize how important it is to quit while you are ahead. No one knows if they are going to be the next victim of addiction, until it grips them. it's not worth the risk. Addiction is a monster!!!!!!!!!!!!

you can never stop thinking about it. u crave for it. it disrupts ur daily life. it affects ur relations with family and friends

An addiction is when you no longer take or do something to feel good but do it to stop from feeling bad.

a serious addiction is a disease. it is impairment of the body and/or mind that alters the way a person thinks, acts and relates to others. usually the person who is addicted is unable to fight the addiction on their own and does need help. seeking or needing help not a reflection of the person, it is a characteristic of the disease. addiction (if it is a full-blown addiction) is bigger than the person alone. many people recover from addiction and it is something one must do for themselves. if you are looking for help, its there. it sounds like you have people in your life that are looking out for you and care very much. i think you will find that there is a right choice for you and only you can make it. i know how hard it is, best of luck.

An addiction is characterized by behavior that has brought pleasure, relief, or fulfillment in the past, but which has become compulsory. Typically the compulsive behavior provides a diminishing level of compensation requiring ever-increasing quantities of substance or frequency of use or behavior. Typical addictions can include substances and behaviors.

When despite negative consequences, one continues to use. Such as the alcoholic who gets 3/4 DUIS or the coke addict that uses their life savings.
