I recently lost my job and I am depressed.?!

Question: I lost my job recently and my kids want me to find a new one. I cannot seem to find a new one. I have been substitute teaching but the pay is terrible. It is one fifth of what I make now. No one wants to hire me because I am in my mid 40's and live in Southern California. What am I to do. I am very depressed.

post a resume on monster.com and snagajob.com and other sites like that. that takes the job of going around looking for places that are hiring. remember be confident during interviews this is what employers look for, confidence. good luck and cheer up you have kids who are there for you and count on you as a role-model.

I'm sorry to hear that you lost your job, but things can be a lot worse. I'm sure you dont want to hear this from a 20 something year old, or anyone else for that matter, but its true. Have you tried the online websites like monster.com and such to find people hiring in your area. its just a rough patch, you'll get through it. try to tune out others opinions.

The first thing you need to do when you are feeling down is get off of your butt for both physical and mental reasons. Once you make yourself do this (which is the hardest part) you'll start to feel better.

Although there may not be any jobs available to you that you are truly interested in, let's face it...you need to find SOMETHING in order to survive...for your sake and your kids. Just remember, it's only temporary. Meanwhile, keep working at finding something else.

Because you are in your 40's is no reason people won't hire you. You need to make yourself wanted. Look online for hints for doing a good interview.

Have you ever considered going back to school? It's never too late for that. If you are that depressed, you may need to talk to someone...professionally..and may even need some medication. Now a days, just about every other person you meet is on an antidepressant....or at least should be.

The only way to break out of the depression is think of your family and apply at every place that you can find. Your next job, might not be the best, but at least it is a paycheck. Don't give up!

being depressed is understandable but won't help at all, in fact if makes things worse. Just don't give up trying to find a job. Believe that the right job will come to you at the right time, but you have to work to find it.
First you have to think about being able to pay for food, shelter, and utilities. Try being a waiter or waitress to make ends meet if you have to. Think about your skill set, what type of work experience do you have, what are you good at, what kind of environment do you like to work in, and change to a different career if necessary.
If S. Cali doesn't have good enough job prospects for you in your chosen career field, moving to a different city or state is an option if an opportunity comes up. The easiest way to get a job is by referral. Reach out to friends or family, they may know of an opening at their workplace or have friends of friends that own a company that's looking to hire, you never know if you don't ask.
