Anti-depressants?!

Question: I took Paxil about 12 yrs ago for approximately 6 months then took myself off. I'm falling into a depression that's keeping me from completing simple daily tasks. Should I ask my Dr. to put me back on Paxil or do you recommend another medication?

First of all, I give you props for realizing that you want to get help and feel better. That is half the battle. Secondly, I would certainly suggest talking with your doctor and seeing what he/she says. I would think that if you mentioned that you took paxil in the past, and it worked for you, that they would probably see no problem in represcribing it for you.

I took paxil in 2001 when I went through a bout with depression, and it worked wonders. I took the medicine for 2 years, and eventually was weaned off of it. It worked great!

You shouldn't have taken yourself off the meds until your doctor told you to. Let your doctor know and they will work with you to get you to feel better.

Another thing to consider is exercising. It doesn't have to be everyday (but that helps), but if you can commit to walking 3-4 times week for 20-30 minutes each time, you'll notice a boost to your confidence. Have a 'walking buddy' and set up a schedule where you can walk together. It usually helps having a walking buddy, and at the same time, you will feel more obligated to stick to the schedule! :)

I know it can be hard, but you're on the definite road to recovery. Keep smiling (or try hard to!), try to defeat the negative thoughts (look at Norman Vincent Peale's stuff; he's great!), and if needed, talk to someone. A counseler, a pastor, etc.

If I can be of any help, don't hesitate to drop me a line through my website, "www.runoverdepression.com" Check it out! It lists famous people who have had depression, as well as some other items of interest!

There are tons of different medications for depression now a days. Go to the doc since you know that your depressed. If Paxil works for you then maybe you could go back on that one, but don't just stop taking the medication. You should talk to your doc when you feel better. A lot of medication needs to be reduced then weaned off of it. Best of luck.

See what the doctor recommends

Why did you take yourself off?
If they didn't work for you then try something different.
I have to take anti depressants and i hate them, they make me feel so numb inside.

Absolutely. If Paxil has been effective for you in the past, you would be wise to go with the same medication this time, as well. If you find, after a few weeks, that you are NOT noticing relief this time around, consider talking with your doc about either a dosage adjustment or a medication change.

For now, your best bet is to go with what has worked in the past.

Best of luck to you in your treatment,
~M~

sometimes it takes a while to find the best med, and many people have problems with paxil. without knowing why you stopped, i would recommend celexa or lexapro. these two have few side effects and are generally very effective. however, again, people respond differently to different drugs. zoloft may work for you, also. regardless, the most important thing is to find one that you can tolerate well and then stay on it. going on and off creates more difficulty, as you are adding mroe fluctuation to your brain's chemical balance. so talk to your doc and give yourself permission to let the meds make you feel better.

Well, the question is why did you take yourself off of it after only 6 months? Was it working or did you feel too many side effects to go on with the medication? Since your current depression is interfering with your completion of daily tasks, I suggest you get professional help. It's been over 14 years since Paxil came out on the market and there are so many other SSRI's out there that may be more effective in treating your symptoms. I'd make an appointment with a psychiatrist who has a good reputation ASAP.

I've had to go through Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, and Wellbutrin before my doctor found Effexor XR. So far, that's the only SSRI that's worked for me. I went off of it for 2 months after having taken it for over 8 years thinking that I really didn't need any meds - the herbal medicine doctor I'm seeing convinced me that I was using meds as an excuse to hide from my problems - apparently not, because I had to go through a horrible period of depression that was making my life unbearable. Getting out of bed was becoming a chore for me. Anyway, I've been back on it now for about 10 days and I'm already starting to get better.

Hang in there and good luck!

Good for you for being proactive! Talk to your doctor and nip this depression in the bud.

If Paxil worked for you in the past, I'd try it again. If it doesn't work for some reason, there are other medications to choose from. But go with what you know has worked in the past. Most likely, it will do the job again.

Best of luck and feel better.

you should probably ask your doctor to put u back on it..and if ur afraid to take that again discuss with your doctor about another tye of medication.

It might be best to work back on paxil at this point. As to date they have not found any possibility of addiction on anti-depressants when taken at the proper dosages.
