Zoloft question:...?!

Question: I hear all these terrifying tales of weight gain after takeing the SSRI Zoloft.I was just prescribed it today(25 mil for the for week, then a whole pill following).I'm 15.Is there anyway I could prevent from gaining weight from it?(I would be in worse condition if I gained weight,my doctor said I might, but it works differently for everyone)

Thanks!

(PS.What exactly does SSRI stand for?I know I look dumb for asking,I'm sorry)

I only gained about ten pounds and only right after I started it--each time I'd tweek around my dosage (It's okay, I'm allowed to increase or decrease it slowly as needed), there was no change. But I've heard that it hits us all differently and zoloft may vary among people more than, for example, welbutrin. (Not even sure if welbutrin would be available for you, because I'm not sure why you're on zoloft.)

To my experiance (all OCD drugs), zoloft is actually a pretty kind one, compared with some of them.

PS--you're NOT dumb for asking what SSRI stands for! It's your body you're putting this stuff into, you NEED to know and have a right to know! I do think you should look into better sources of info than yahoo!answers, though. Go forth and Google, girl!

Never be sorry for asking, I am on 100mg of Zoloft and the reason my weight gains is because I also have underactive thyroid. Eat Healthy and excersice (not too much) and accept yourself for who you are. I have a group on msn called Depression. Feel free to look.

SSRI is: SSRIs are a type of antidepressant that can relieve the symptoms of depression, such as sadness and irritability. Learn how they work and what side effects they can cause. This came from a google search.

SSRI stands for selective seratone re-uptake inhibitor. Run SSRI through a search engine, there is heaps of information on how they work. As for weight gain i put on about 3 -5kg, that weight is now coming of through exercise and a healthy diet. Good luck on your road to recovery.

I took Zoloft and so did my friend and we didnt gain any weight. Just be aware of what you are eating and get some exercise and you'll be fine. Don't mindlessly eat.

You don't look dumb for asking...SSRI stands for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. You won't necessarily gain weight. Just increase your exercise...which will also help your depression. Good Luck.

I have been on Zoloft for 2 years and it hasn't affected my weight at all. However, a lot of people say that birth control will make you gain weight and I have taken that for awhile as well...with no weight gain. I am not an especially skinny person and my metabolism isn't that great either...I think it depends on the person.

You don't have to gain weight. Just eat what you normally do and you will not have a problem. I don't know the other question. I think it has to do with serotonin.

I was on Zoloft from age 17 to age 21.
I didn't gain weight, but my throat was CONSTANTLY dry, and if I ever skipped a dose, I would get EXTREMELY dizzy until the next pill kicked in.
At 15, you shouldn't be having sex, but Zoloft does cause unwanted sexual side effects.
Also, I found that although the Zoloft took away my depression, it also took away all of my other emotions too, and I think I was worse off with the med than without. Without the med, I felt sad all the time, but, with it, I felt nothing. All my loved ones could have died, and I wouldn't have cared.
Therefore, I took myself off the drug, and it took me 6 YEARS to gain my emotions back.
