Do I need help?!


Question: Before leaving the house I must check and check and recheck and check and recheck again to make sure my sink taps are all off in the house. I sometimes have to wake up in the middle of the night to check if they are off? What should I do?

I would get help. I know you must be dreading it because you posted it to a blog to get answers from people you will never meet again, so you don't have to go through the humiliation of telling them that you failed. I know this because I went through something very similar. It got to the point where i snapped and had to be hospitalized for it. Your problem does not sound as developed as mine, so I would call a psychiatrist and get it straightened out. I might seem like a big pain, but believe me if you take the "I'll get better approach" you'll regret it.

If the behavior is distressing to you (or if consumes an inordinate amount of time), consider discussing the matter with a psychologist. There are both psychological and pharmacological interventions which are very helpful for patients with symptoms similar to what you have described.

OCD. I'm the same. When I'm watching TV, the volume must be on an even number. I check and recheck things as well. I guess everyone just has one of 'those things.' But you sound like you have OCD.

Sounds like OCD but only a psychiatrist can diagnose that. Anti-depressants can help with OCD but be careful, some antidepressants can make you feel suicidal along with other side-effects such as weight gain and fatigue. You may want to look into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT changes the way you think. Learn more about it here:
