A diathermy machine is one used to heat tissue by electrical or ultrasonic means. There are three kinds of diathermy devices, Ultrasonic, Electromagnetic, and Surgical. The first two are used in therapy to induce heat in muscles for therapeutic relaxation. It does not damage tissue. Surgical diathermy is used, usually to heat tissue to cauterize blood vessels; it damages tissue.
