Comprehension problems? or just stupid? :)?!


Question: ok,...so im in 10 grade. i should be in algebra 1,...but no. im in algrebra intro sort of? but anyways....i dont understand ANYTHING the teacher is explaining. Nothing at all. I ask him to explain it to me by myself,..that still doesn't help. Tutorials,...nothing. I just can't understand how to do this stuff all year? you would think after taking this class twice? i would start to get it? no. My parents say i just dont try hard enough,...i do. I really want to fix this little problem,..im scared to get a job somewhere i will have to count money or use the register,...thats really sad. Please,..if anyone has something,....im all ears,....well....eyes. :) thankyou.

No, you are not stupid, sometimes things are just hard to get, and then finally they will click together. The important part is not to give up. Also go to the library and check out a bunch of different books on the part Algebra you are taking.

Sometimes it is just the way the teacher and the book are explaining it, and when you get a different book with a different author, he or she will say it in a way that makes sense to you and then BAM, it clicks.

Here is a tip that may be of use -- I am not sure what part of Algebra you are in, but here goes.

In Algebra problems, you often have two sides of an equation that are in balance. For instance, look at this:
3 = 3
The equation is like a see-saw or a scale. The equals sign is the middle, and the two sides are the two ends. In order for a scale or see-saw (teeter-tooter) to be balanced, both sides have to have the same weight. So in this example, the problem is saying that the right side is 3. The left side is also the same amount, it is three also.

Now, often is Algebra you have an unknown value, and the equation will look like this but with an unknown part.
x +1 = 3
So on the right side is 3, and because you have to always keep the scale balanced at all times, the left side is also 3. The problem is that there is an unknown part ,called x. The left side is something plus 1. Now remember the right side is 3, so the left side is also 3 because it is always in balance. So something, x, plus 1 is equal to three. We can look at the equation and guess that x is 2, because 2 + 1 will give is three.
With Algebra there is different tricks to do, so let's do it with a trick. So,
x + 1 = 3
So remember we have to keep each side balanced, so if we do something to one side, then we have to do it with the other side. So pretend there are 3 kids on one side of the scale, let's take one off each side. The right side, you do 3 - 1 and that gives us 2. Now do the left side, let's take one away, and now we are left with x, so the new equation is
x = 2
Now the right side is 2, and the left side is x. Since both sides are balanced, and the right side is 2, then the left side has to also be 2. Since x is all alone, we know that this unknown value called x, must also be 2.

I am horrible at math, but you should be perfectly fine using a cash register. I can its simple math, for a cash register.

Talk to your guidance counselor. They may have some kind of testing for you. My former boss was brilliant, but numbers mean nothing to her. She can't figure out percent, even!

Could be your brain just doesn't get the way your teacher is...teaching. I was an A+ student in highschool, and in grade 10 chem I got a barely passing mark, but I swear it was the teacher. Think about a study group so you can get peer help, or a tutor (prob. find one for free). If you think it's really a big problem, talk to a doc...it could be something fixable...

Do you read a lot? The reason I ask this is because it sounds like you are just not retaining the information you are learning and reading will help you to learn to retain things. Just start reading books, something you like that will grab your attention and not let you go. This may help, just a thought.

I sucked at math... I have a nice government job now. Don't worry about your weaknesses, work with your strengths.

Check the internet for soft ware.Some years ago I ought my grand daughter some learning software with the name Carmen SanDiego in the title.

Your question & explaination could have been written by me! I am very good at reading & writing but have always struggled with math. Finally, when I got to college they tested me and found I had a learning disability in math. They didn't figure out what type of disability - just the fact that I just couldn't comprehend it. Because of that, I was given extra time & help to complete math assignments and tests.

To this day, I suck at simple math problems - silly things like it says 7 x 6 = and I put 13 (by the way - I had to count on my fingers to figure out 7 + 6 just now!!! LOL You are not alone!)

I had a job as a cashier - the registers do it all for you! As long as you can count correctly the amount of money the customer has given you & are able to count out money to give them change - no problem! Relax!
