Is it possible to be a cutter (self injurer) and not be depressed?!

Question: Or, if you self injure, does it mean that you have depression??
I've just been wondering and trying to figure this out for a while...

Most people who self injure are probably depressed.

Some people here mentioned Borderline Personality Disorder; but that disorder includes depression as one of it's symptoms. If you have BPD, then you have depression at least some of the time. (According to the DSM-IV; manual of mental disorders). Depression can be disorder in itself, or it can be part of a more complicated disorder such as Bipolar, Schizoaffective Disorder, etc.

In some cases, somebody might be faking depression, trying to call attention to themselves, trying to manipulate others, or trying to fit into some kind of social group. But most of the time, a "cutter" is likely to be depressed.

If you're a cutter, you need professional help. People don't cut themselves if there are not underlying problems.

Yes, it is possible for this symptom to be present even in the absence of depression. In fact, self-injury is common among people with borderline personality disorder (and other conditions).

good question- I know i'm depressed and i'm a cutter.

As michele said, self-injury is often associated with borderline personality disorder. It frequently coincides with depression, but not always.

I think so. I have suffered from self harm for many years on and off and although I cut myself when I'm depressed, sometimes I do this when I'm angry or frustrated eg after a row with my boyfriend or after a hard day at work. It's hard but with the help of my therapist and citalopram which is a short term solution, I'm getting better. Merry Christmas to you sweetie xxx

Yes it is. I have a friend who cuts and she does not know why. She is not sad at all. Its just something she started and can't stop.

Help for "cutters"

it means something going on, and most cutters i've seen have been either depressed or have borderline personality disorder

Ya know, you can be without having depression. It doesn't make sense to a lot of people, but there are cases of it. It could just be stress for some people, but not that they are necessarily depressed, or they could be extremely happy and love life but still cut for a thrill. It's harder to explain that someone may cut without being depressed, but it does happen. And I need people to stop associating cutters with BPD. With how "popular" cutting has become in the last few decades, it is hardly a definitive sign of BPD now. Sorry. It's just a pet peeve of mine.

its possible, because cutting releases endorphins(same things as when you work out), which make you feel good.
