Has anybody taken wellbutrin?!

Question: is it true that it suppresses your appetite? my doctor is suggesting that i start on wellbutrin for depression, and think that one of the effects (appetite suppression) may help me lose weight as well, since im overweight (due to excessive eating because of the depression). is this true? what are your experiences with wellbutrin?

I was on Zoloft first and you wouldn't believe the difference between Zoloft and Welbutrin. Yes it is an appetite suppressant, though unless you work out on top of it, you're not going to loose any weight. I lost about fifty pounds but that was with going to the gym and making sure I cut back my portions even more. I just didn't eat as much. Also, unlike Zoloft which causes sexual disfunction, Welbutrin actually enhances sexual stuff. That eventually goes away, but its pretty cool in the beginning.

Its the only med that's worked for me and never given me the bad side effects you're used to having on other meds.

Yes. Appetite suppression and associated weight loss is a very common (and very welcome for most patients) side effect of Wellbutrin. In addition, it is an excellent anti-depressant.

Best of luck to you in your treatment,
~M~

p.s. Wellbutrin also carries a significant risk of seizure, particularly for folks with eating disorders. If this is an issue for you (i.e. eating disorder), and your phsyician is not yet aware of it, you should let him/her know prior to beginning this medication.

i took wellbutrin years ago to help me stop smoking and it started my mood swings. it just wasn't right for me and i still battle horrible mood swings every day. i'd explore all your options before deciding on one certain medication.

Wellbutrin does give some people a bit of a pick-me-up and apetite suppression. So it would be worth a try.

They say that most anti-depressants has weight loss as a side effect, but that hasn't been the case for me.

But I am sure that as your depression lessens, you'll become more active and that, combined with not eating to overcome depression, will help you lose weight.
