There are programs in the U.S. that help the homeless get on their feet. However, there are many homeless people who are out on the streets because they are mentally unstable. These people belong in a hospital environment where they can be monitored and cared for. It is unfortunate that the ACLU has made it impossible to put those who need this type of care in a mental institution without having to go to court.

Anyone willing to 1) take their medication and 2) accept help can get all of the help that they need in the US or Canada.

I'm pretty sure they can go to a shelter...and that will help them.

Unfortunately, society does very little to help the homeless people rehabilitate themselves back into a productive member of society. What few programs that are available don't reach out far enough to the many thousands of homeless. They are looked down upon by many members of society for there lack of determination, drinking problems, and mental illnesses. I for one, would like to see more aggressive programs in walking the homeless through the steps towards getting them back on their feet again. Why should society only be concerned with the rich and the power of the all mighty dollar.

it seems there are a lot of homeless people without help here in America...got to Crookston MN they have a very good place for that purpose

In the USA, yes there are programs available. one program is named "LRP". The LRP (Life Recovery Program) is designed to assist those who are homeless. The program takes them in providing a place for them to stay, it provides classes for them such as life skills classes, G.E.D. classes, and addiction recovery classes.
They are given work to preform and after a series of classes they are "given" a job. They are taught how to manage their money and after even more training they are transfered to a apartment of their own and helped through a outreach assistance program.

Most homeless people do not want to work. They really don't want a job. They want a handout not a hand up.I have tryed employing some of these people for minimum wage.I was told why should they work when they can make more money pan-handling.I knew a couple who went out of town each week and begged on corners and made tax free money and drove better cars than I did. There was a man in a wheel chair at a corner begging. At the end of the day he put his wheel chair in his new Cadillac. The local news station busted him.

yes i believe it is possable if they really want it.there are shelters that lead these people to some agencys that could help them.but they have to be willing to do whatever it takes.if they want off the streets bad enough with guildness and doing the footwork they can do it,i know because a long way back that was me.

Sure it is, i was once homeless in California in 1986. There are many agencies in each state that will help a person to get a job and get off the street. Its up to that person to be willing to
do so and get the job that will provide a paycheck. Remember as long as your working you will have a roof and food. People get laid off every day but, there is always another job out there it might not pay as much but its money!

Homeless is a big word that encompasses diffrent types of people. The Ny times did and article on this topic back in 2001 and basicl ystated that there are manymany homeless people who go to office jobs etc and who cannot make ends meet, therefore live in shelters, or with friends and relatives. I am going out on a limb here, and I am assuming you are speaking of the ones who live literally on the street. However, NOT all of those people are "sick"; again many have no where to turn...state agencies and city agencies do not have enough funds to help those people. Many resources have been created for that purpose.... and in NY I believe theri are a few Non-Profit organizations in additon to faith-based organizations that can provide help

Seems as though many are rather uninformed on several issues of not only the homeless lets include the disabled and the handicapped. As far as ALL THE HELP they need that is so not the case, people that draw Social Security Income that barely covers the expense of living let alone food or transportation. Without Section 8 which normally have HUGE waiting lists and food stamps which if you draw SSI you make to much money to get those by the way. So look at what society does they make those who are truly handicapped into poverty struck humans that have to devalue them selves to even exist.
