What is the link between people with mental illness and their ability to be bril!

Question: i've read a lot of places, bipolar people are among the most creative and most talented. they suffer from depression and such. so how is that possible? i looked on wikipedia, and i couldn't believe the celebrities with bipolar disorder, even macy gray and amy winehouse suffer from biolar disorder. are people born with mental illness or does it develop over time? it could be genetic i know.

here is the links i was looking at.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_dis...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_peo...

a lot of poets, actors, singers, leaders, scientists, doctors, etc. were on that list. its amazing.
its said that people often write their best works in times of pain. paint their pain, write out their pain, and that is what makes them so talented and admired.

I guess you can say that their brains are "wired" differently - and this causes them to react to the world differently. They might perceive the world differently which would cause a response different to people without disorders. Or perhaps their perception is the same, but just a different response. It is well known that different parts of the brain are used for different tasks (the left parietal lobe is better used for logic while the right parietal lobe is used for creativity). There might be a difference in the connection between the two, as there was for the Rainman. The Rainman memorizes everything he reads (like 90% or something).

Basically, the simple answer to your question would be "the wiring of each individual's brain".

There is a link to caffeine (& caffeine-like substances) allergy & bipolar, schizophrenia, & other mental disorders.

I think the amount of disfunctional, bright unemployed bipolars is greater than the # of creative, productive, brilliant bipolars out there. That notion of bp ppl. being all the wonderful things described in your ? is a romanticized version or small potential part of the disorder. The bp ppl. I've met often have difficulty maintaining jobs but are creative. how helpful is that for the real world unless they are CONSISTENT and creative enough to market themselves or complete schooling?

As for whether it develops over time +/is genetic, i think it's a combo. of both. Something happens in life that triggers mania or depression leading to the bp diagnosis @some point, so that touches upon the issue of it developing over time. Also it's genetic b.c. there are links to it being hereditary (but I think it's only around 20% or so according to something I read years ago, so that % might have changed).
