Need reply from those who are bipolar?!

Question: Are those who suffer from bipolar able to control themselves for any nasty actions committed?

Answers: Are those who suffer from bipolar able to control themselves for any nasty actions committed?

My wife has bipolar disorder and the effects have devastated our family because she is unable to control herself.

Speaking to a psychologist who I sought for help, she said that the answer to your question varies from individual to individual.

Some bipolar sufferers (like my wife) are so completely sure of themselves that they do crazy things that sometimes do hurt other people, but are convinced that what they are doing is perfectly normal for them. Sometimes they can even con other people into agreeing with them because they are so confident (and I know that's true because once or twice she's duped me before we knew she had the condition).

Other sufferers, my psychologist said, do have enough sense to realize when their actions are abnormal and that they are going through a manic phase.

So the answer to your question is that it varies with the individual. It can be yes or no (and probably all shades of inbetween).

Yes, but it is SO hard.

I have to TRY and STOP and think of what could happen if I let myself blow up.

Yes and no.

Generaly if I sleep well and exercise im fine

It takes a whole lot of support and long-term therapy(2-3 years) for it to even be possible...I have been working on it for six years, and I still struggle to control these things.

See www.nami.org for all kinds of information
Bipolar is considered very treatable.

But...
How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb ?
Only one, but the light bulb has to want to change.

why do you mean-o juje people with this disorder

ya no sry i didnt mean to explode like that

i guess its hard 4 us to be sexy we have major moodswings

I am ABLE but I get in moods whee i just dont care, so i blow up or do something i know is wrong or affect me later..and after its all said and done i throw a pitty party for myself.. i know thats not healthy but its true.

I am bi-polar. I do, however, don't fully understand your question.

Are you saying is someone hurts me physically or emotional can I control my reaction? Violence, revenge, etc...

The answer is yes. I am medicated and seek regular therapy. I have to say I hold a grudge when I am wronged, but I do not actively do anything to settle it. I just grin and bear it.

do you mean legally? My sister is bipolar affected schizophrenic. She has gotten into financial trouble (don't ask me how she approached heaps of banks and got heaps of credit cards on centrelink) well, the banks had to write it all off although I think its on her history and she will never get a loan for anything in her life. Here in Australia your finances can get taken over by the State Trustees which seems a pain but, it can be a good thing. They handle all the bills and just give her an allowance so rent is paid, power, gas etc...

I am Manic, and take medications to stabilize my moods,I have never had any nasty episodes.I also have PTSD,from combat in the military.

Still on medication and if someone cuts me off while driving down the road, I now develop road rage and it's difficult to control for me. The youth that I run into at the mall seam to make my moods worse than when I went in the mall. Certain things do light my fuse and depending on the circumstances, sometimes that fuse gets lit.

support groups and day centres can be helpful. I dont suffer from a mental disorder but I DID used to work in one. - day centre that it.

Before I was medicated I was able to 'control' myself. For me, there was this line telling me what was sensible and what wasn't. As I got older that line became more and more vague. Thankfully I recognized what was happeing before anything bad happened because I knew that Bipolar disorder ran in the family. But I did make a few people feel like crap first.........

Not sure about what you are asking. But I will say yes.

It depends on the person. No one can really answer this for you unfortunately. All people are different. Also it depends on if they want to control it. I know that sound absurd but that's the truth. It depends on the person and if they're using their disorder to their advantage. JMO.

It can be managed with will power. =}

I haven't been diagnosed but I'm definitely bipolar by the symptoms. The only nasty action I make is rudeness to people who piss me off. If I'm going through a moment I don't care what the other person thinks. But if it is really bad, I'll appologize. I think that's really the only thing you can do. I would NEVER take medication for this. I think people who are bipolar are this way for a reason. Mostly I just get depressed very easily. I can be in the middle of a party and get very very sad. And then two minutes later I'm fine. If you are lashing out uncontrollably, you just need to teach yourself some control. Please don't let the docs give you meds for this.

Yes and No. Yes one can learn to be aware of an on coming manic or hypomanic episode by using cognitive therapy. No if one is in a state of mania. I myself am hypomanic, I've never experienced full mania, and never wish to. I'll write more tomorrow (with links and such) since I'm using my cell and it's a pain in the butt.

Yes, ultimately you are in control even if you fly off the handle.

Your true nature will be amped up, weather it's good or bad.

Right actions produce right results. Stay on meds, avoid stress, be at peace. Stay centered.

I don't always feel like I can control myself when I get high. It's very difficult and the things I end up doing are very out of character for me.

But whatever I do I still have to take responsibility for my actions and I cannot use my illness as an excuse.

Hope this helps.
