Do you know anyone who had Munchausen by proxy syndrome?!

Question: http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/tc/mu...

What was involved? I'm asking because a family member was recently diagnosed with ADHD, but not before his mother convinced a different psychiatrist that he was bipolar. After that, she went back to the second psychiatrist and convinced him that the boy has Tourettes too (which he does not.) Is it possible she has Munchausen syndrome by proxy?

My mother did. She taught us to be ill, that being ill gave you "good" attention. It took a long time to reprogram this in myself, my sisters have not done so well.
It really sounds like this is the case with this mother also.Even after the child is "rescued" it will be a long unlearning process if it has been going on for a long time. The mom will need help as much as the boy. She is not bad, just sick. Somewhere she was taught this behavior. Good luck to you & manyBlessings for your helping them.
Blessings & Peace!

Anyone who harms another person in order to bring attention to themselves for sympathy or to have others believe they are wonderful people for standing by such a sick person ( for example) has Munchhausen by proxy. The most common offenders are women with young children. They have the opportunity and care of someone who is often too young to realize that the person making them sick or injuring them is their own Mother. Danger flags that the medical profession looks for are many trips to different doctors and hospitals by the young patient with quite serious (or even life-threatening) conditions.

That sounds like the case to me. I am surprised that the doctors have not approached her on this.

In these cases, it is the patient who is usually the healthiest one in the family! I have taken care of children as a pediatrics nurse who had parents who wanted their children to be sick. In a twisted way the parent enjoys the attention if the child is sick. Parents have even gone so far as to actually give laxatives to their children and then claim the child has uncontrolled diarrhea. Things like that. Children and Youth needs to be called when this is suspected.

Hi Zelda it is possible that the mothers is suffering from this syndrome.
It is one of two things or she has it which it sounds to be the case here or THERE IS something wrong with the son and she is begging for a proper diagnosis for him.

I knew of a woman that suffered from this and was hospitalized and the child WAS removed. If this is this woman's case she would need a psychiatric assessment done on her (willingly or forced by a family doctor or direct family member, Child services can also force this assessment to be done).
If you think that this is the case YOU should talk this over with one of her family members if there is one or contact the proper authorities as this can be fatal to her son.
