Sadly ignorant people, Including some psychiatrists, think that mental illness makes you incapable of logical reason. It is a stereotype that has persisted through the ages. I have had to fight more than my share of ignorant Psychiatrists and laymen alike! Most Psychiatrists don't know what to do with me because I know too much about THEIR profession. I am too educated and many who go into that field have God complexes. They can't imagine that someone who has suffered with it for a lifetime can actually tell the difference between a Chemical depression and a situational emotion.

They do not realize that the depression does not affect the ability to be reasonable constantly. Yes, there are times the depression can make a person unreasonable... but even when I am in that state... I know I am being unreasonable. I just can't control it.

It is frustrating. I think we need to get more education to the public so they will stop being so ignorant about it. I also think that any psychiatrist who has not had a depression problem themselves, should spend some time actually listening to the depressed and learn a little something too.

Good question, i often wonder that too. My husb uses mine against me whenever I don't agree with him or complain about something stupid like.. the fact he doesn't work.. hmmmm.

If you were capable of valid and reasonable emotions then quiet frankly you would not be severely, chronically and clinically depressed.

Probably not the answer you were hoping for.

People don't know how to deal with your illness so they relate all of your actions to it. They use the illness as a blanket to cover up the truth. If people can find a label to mark others with, in any circumstance, they use that label to it's fullest extent and relate everything they do to it.

I know what you mean.

It is so sad when people take away from the depressed person the very thing that they need most: Validation... ie RESPECT.... some semblance of personal power and influence over their own lives.

To answer your Q... I'm not sure, but maybe people do it because they don't want to understand your pain... empathy means they would feel what you feel, and that would be, well... OUCHY.

It's self-preservation, really... I think people can really only understand a depressed person (and how to usefully respond to the emotions, etc) when they have experienced it themselves.
