It's possible that the meds he was taking are not the right ones for him and he should be changed to another one. Only a professional should be helping him. I have a close friend and now my daughter who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. They are each on different meds but both are now doing well taking what is currently prescribed for them. It can be very dangerous to NOT take meds. Please let him know that medical help is very important.
The only successful treatment of bipolar disorder is prescription medication. Nothing is as effective. Maybe his meds need an adjustment to be less numbing, but there's nothing you can really do if he refuses to take them.
