Depressed Boyfriend?!

Question: My boyfriend has never been the type to be upset and touchy, but lately he has been telling me that he is just feeling "bummed out" for no aparent reason. He did admit to having family problems and such, and he has been sick this whole month (kidney stones, which he gets regularly). He has been saying hes mad at himself and that he feels like a loser. Its killing me to know that he's feeling this way and doesnt even know why, this is so out of his charactor. He told me yesterday that the only time he knows he won't feel depressed is when hes with me and that i was the only person he could talk to about this stuff. I just don't know what to do, I really need advice as to what could possibly be making him so depressed and then figuring out a way to help him through it. My idea was that since its getting dark out earlier is making him depressed and that hes stressed from missing so much school and family problems on top of that but I don't know. Any feed back is welcome. Thanks :)

I hate that it gets dark out so early, It makes a lot of people depressed including me. He could be depressed by various things, maybe it's all that you listed, but there's not much you can do for him other than stay by his side and let him know he's not alone. People go through phases like this sometimes, it's really not that abnormal. sorry I can't really offer that great of advice, I hope he gets out of his depression fast. Bye

He should see a therapist/psychiatrist and perhaps they can prescribe him some tranquilizers like xanax. My mom suffers from depression and it really helps.

Just give him a hug and a kiss and tell him you'll be there for him through everything, if you really love him, it'll be easy. Just tell him.

Thank goodness he has you. But thats alot of pressure for you being girlfriend and counselor.
Could he possibly get some counseling, maybe he has seasonal disaffecive disorder but maybe it;s more serious - like depression. There are lots of great meds to get him over the hump but counseling is the number one important thing. Try to talk him into it. Everyone needs some help sometime.

you say he's "never been the type to be...", but that probably means he's been bottling it all up...family problems aren't things that come and go easily, so you need to be sympathetic and let him know that you love him, care about him, and that if there's anything he needs to talk/vent about, that you will be there for him. remember that you are his girlfriend, not his messiah, so don't be mad at yourself if you can't make everything perfect for him.
