Prozac may well work. You'll likely have to give it a chance. 10mg is a rather small dose. About all you can expect from any SSRI is to be relieved of the sudden periods of blackness found in depression. It's supposed also relieve the constant replaying of unhappy episodes in your mind, and while it does this to a certain extent, it probably can't eliminate it altogether.
What Prozac or any medication can do is to give you sufficient strength to carry on with your life, and that's quite a job right there. It won't cure you completely, especially if you've become 'addicted to depression,' which can happen to some of us.
What's most important is to approach mental health problems with intelligence and a sense of responsibility. The doctor will help, but you must cooperate. Sometimes it's tough.
As above says give it a try but make sure you take it for more than 2 weeks exactly as it tells you as it often wont work until 14 days are up.Ive heard lots of cases where people have actually commited suicide before the 14 days and not given it a chance.Give the stuff a chance,it should work.
Whether or not prozac will work depends largely on the reason for which it was prescribed for you.
It is important to note that discontinuing xanax abruptly could kill you (literally). If you are discontinuing xanax and replacing it with the prozac, be sure that you are doing it properly (i.e., weaning off slowly).

Prozac is a little different chemically than the other ssri's. If you are wondering why he gave you this, then take responsibility for the question and for your own body and ask him. Call his office, ask to speak to the nurse, and say that you are concerned about the reason he'd put you on yet another ssri. If you aren't satisified with the answer, then get another opinion, or get another doctor.
Possibly you should be in counselling to help with behaviorally modifying your mental health outcome.
Consider that there are other medications that your doctor may not know about, or hasn't considered. How about dilantin? That one has been used for a variety of conditions, including certain mental health issues.
Research this online, and learn about the ssri's, the trycyclic antidepressants, the newest generations of antidepressants, and then go to the doctor with your new knowledge and ask about what else can be done to help your condition.
If you aren't satisfied, then ask your doctor for an actual mental health referral. Your health is your own responsibility, and even though the doctor owns the prescription pad and has the thousands of hours of knowledge-gathering to his credit, do be aware that not all docs are equally gifted or able to deal with all issues.
Sounds like you may need a different doctor. Don't be mad at your doc, though. Take responsibility and lead your own life (as in take charge, and drag it forward). Learn, and live with great blessings.
