Why do am I so reluctant to take my meds when I know I need them?!

Question: I'm bipolar and I know the most successful treatment is medication. I've found a cocktail that works for me, but I have a lot of trouble convincing myself to take the meds. Why do I have such a problem taking them when I know they help?

Honestly....Because it sucks to need them. It can be hard to accept the need for them. But if you really want to have some stability and normalcy in your life, you will take them exactly as prescribed every day. Maybe you have not had enough of the chaos and misery that comes along with being untreated bipolar. Eventually, it gets very, very old.
I speak from experience. I've had BP since I was a young child but was not properly diagnosed until I was about 25. At 31...I take my meds faithfully. I can not take living the way I was living. I made a disaster of everything I touched.

If you have found a cocktail that works for you, you are very lucky. It is very hard to find that ... it usually takes a long time...and if you comply with treatment, your entire life can change for the better.

Have you really accepted the diagnosis? Do you understand this is a biologically based illness that needs to be treated the same way any illness does? You are not dealing with some sort of character weakness...there are physiological things involved with bipolar disorder. It can be managed with meds, but without them it can destroy you.

Maybe it will help if you make a deal with yourself to do something like take the meds as prescribed for the next two months to see how you feel.

I had a very hard time taking them right until I started to use a daily AM/PM med dispenser. I had to do that for about 2 years before it became a habit...but eventually it has and I am extremely good at taking them like I need to now. If I can do it, you can do it.

Because one of the side effects of the meds is that you feel numb, zombie like and or that you feel Well...
Also a bipolar Hi is great, dangerous but feels great..
TAKE YOUR MEDS.....

if you cried to jesus, and sincerely said you were sorry for any wrong you've done

you know, he'd probably be real merciful and heal you and you wouldn't need meds

but if you don't, me just saying "take the meds" isn't a good answer -

mostly, i feel sorry, for you

don't feel bad, i'll pray for you tonight

i promise...

pray you'll never have to take meds again

I dated a bipolar for several years. He was reluctant to take his meds at first and i feel the reasons why are because by taking the meds, you are first of all admitting you have something that you can't "fix" yourself (or without meds). Second, he was addicted to the high he received when he was manic. He felt as though if he took meds to stop his mania, then he wouldn't ever be able to be successful again in business, nor relationships because he felt that mania is what made him successful in those things. Truthfully, I couldn't stand being around him when he was manic. I was literally uncomfortable around him. I would always say to him that his mania to me, was prob compared to how i feel when i did ecstasy, and his mania to him was "normal." However when he was not manic, his mania to him was depression, when to me, he was finally acting normal.

I understand you may be feeling reluctant, but bipolar can be a b*t*h to fight on your own. Thank god, there are certain medications to assist you in stabilizing your life and mental health.

Good luck and much love.
