Does writing help you cope with your emotions?!

Question: Yes. I have Bipolar Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. My Psychiatrist encourages me to write. It is a form of expression. You have to get your emotions out somehow. If not you let it ball up and eventually you blow up. I would definitely encourage you to write... Poetry, songs, Diary and Journals are good ways to do it.

Writing in any form is a lost art and a very meaningful method of self healing. I myself am a musician and through the hardest days of my life, I have always turned to writing as a method to cope with my thoughts, feelings and emotions. It is very surprising what can come out of your mind when you write and I would suggest anyone who is going through any type of life crisis to open a book and write!

maybe a small effect for me

It certainly does with me. I also find it helpful, when I'm writing, to use profanity it helps me say exactly what I want to say some times. It also helps me if I am not at all objective. I.e. making that other person into the biggest bastard in the universe. You know it's probably not true, but you're not going to share the thing you're writing with the people you are writing about. I always feel a lot better when I'm finished.

yes, i try to journal...it helps me put down on paper whats on my mind...what the situation is, how do/did i handle it...later you can journal what the outcome was and was it beneficial - be sure to date your writings and kinda keep an index...that way, you can refer back to your previous experiences...

Yes, studies have shown people with mood disorders who write down or journal feel more in control of their live.

Yes, any way you can express feelings helps...
especially helpful is confiding in a GENUINE FRIEND

Yes, writing certainly does help a person to express themselves and unload all that is bottled up inside them. I have had 100's of poems published and a new book coming out in the new year. Writing articles is another way of expressing yourself which I have found helpful, not only for me but for many others. I always have a pen and paper handy. Get writing and unload and a weight will be lifted from you.

kind of, i keep diary's (since 2002) and i just write about anything. but when i get angry, i write stuff down in my diary and i feel better, like i have told someone.

Yes. For many people, just getting stuff down is enough. Other people need a more structured, or different, approach. Among the ways that writing can be really helpful are:
(a) writing a letter to someone you can't really say what you want to (they may be dead, or may have treated you badly, or you fear speaking to them for any reason) - just the writing and DEFINITELY NOT SENDING can be great, and you may then want to do some sort of ritual such as burning the letter, or tearing it up and scattering it, or putting it somewhere significant
(b) using the approach of Julia Cameron in "The Artist's Way" - writing 'morning pages', a stream of consciousness that is NOT intended to be re-read for which the only rule is that you have to keep writing without stopping, even if all you can write is "this is the stupidest thing I've ever done, blah blah blah", for the 10 minutes or 4 sides or whatever you decide
(c) turning your thoughts, feelings and experience into a short story, so you can fictionalise what has been painful or difficult, can be hugely helpful (I found it essential in my own self-work).

Writing, drawing, singing, exercising.

They all help.
