As long as you feel you need to and do not be afraid to return.

If you are "just coping", I would suggest going until you ARE coping. It also depends on whether or not you feel ready to give up the therapy. If you give up the therapy for a while and try to cope on your own, you can always go back if you feel that you need to. Your therapist can also tell you if you are ready. Good luck and keep smiling.

It really is a case of 'how long is a piece of string?'. Everybody is different. Some people want to get out of therapy as soon as they feel a bit better. Others want to carry on because they feel they can benefit by going deeper. Others go on still longer because they are fascinated by how they feel they are becoming more and more themselves.

What you are initially trying to deal with is not really the point. We are such complex creatures, and it's really about how you as an individual feel in yourself - your therapist will have some idea of how things are going, but ultimately only you can decide.

I have worked with people for a few weeks; most people I see for 6 months to 3 years; a few I've worked with for five years or more. The long-term people are not necessarily the ones who seemed in most of a mess when they arrived!
