Either manic or depressive episodes can be triggered or just occur. Usually there are warning signs that are sometimes specific to that person that a change is happening. Sometimes the change happens very fast. Contrary to what has already been said, people with bipolar disorder (myself included) can have a great deal of insight into their condition and know that their behaviour is "off" when it is happening. People without bipolar or without insight find this difficult to comprehend - if we know then why can't we stop it? Sometimes episodes can be avoided - with myself I try to sleep if something is changing though if I'm becoming high I may need diazepam to aid daytime sleep. People are affected by degrees and therefore what will be a great help to one person just wouldn't touch another.

Manic means it can occur at any given time. There is need for a trigger. The person themselves cannot judge things as others do. They have highs and lows for what others interpret as no reason. Of course, just like with anyone - something can set them off as well.

This all depends on how fast you cycle. Yes, you can be triggered, but otherwise you will "cycle" from one extreme to the other. Some people "rapid cycle" and can go back and forth several times a week or even a day. Wikipedia, WebMD, and About.com all have very good articles for learning about bipolar and cycling. I advise reading up on them. Good luck.

from personal experience it is mostly triggered by something ti could be work, family friends etc.my family notices I have episodes a couple times a week. And no medications do not stop the episodes but they help the racing thoughts my friend.

you need meds to be regulated otherwise when depressed can turn into suicidal atempts
