How do you deal with severe depression without drugs?!

Question: First, it is great that you do not want to take the easy way out of popping pills.
Number one is to change your daily routine. The day in day out routine will keep you down.
Try and surround yourself with positive people. Stay away from the others.
Do not watch the news. Turn on comedy shows. If you have God in your life the power of prayer is wonderful. Try it!
Have you figured out what is causing the depression? If you have, seach the internet for forums where you can talk to others with the similar problem. It really helps.
I wish you the best......

Talk to close friends or family members whom you trust. Opening up to people and being able to share your feelings is often a good start to working through depression.

If you don't think that will help, perhaps you should consider talking to a therapist or counsellor who specifically deals with people suffering from depression.

plenty of positive friends, if you're active in church - talk to your pastor/priest - they are great to talk to! try not to spend alot of time alone...........keep busy

Too hard without drugs. If you have been diagnosed with chronic depression you should take the drugs prescribed and down the line they may need adjusting. You should also get regular exercise.

have you checked your cholesterol? sometimes low cholesterol can cause depression -- lower than 160. the brain doesn't get enough serotonin - this causes depression. so, if your cholesterol is low, this might be the culprit. eat fattening foods. comfort foods - called this for that reason likely - might help. chocolate especially - because this also has endorphins which could help your mood.

blue mountain black tea or Avon cologne specially made for that ,mugwort or St John's wort, weed isn't a drug ;) coffee helps chocolate helps and other food helps too,so does counselling

stay close to family and friends who understand you and be in a enviroment that you feel comfortable in and if you are christian go to church and continue you pray i hope this helps god bless and take care

talk to people,
listen to your favorite music,
pray,
plan,
"fake it until you make it!"
read,
draw,
paint,
watch good movies, incorporate plenty of water,
fruits and veggies...especially lemons..into your diet,
exercise,
dance,
cry,
p.u.s.h=Pray Until Something Happens.
get involved with helping others,
spend time with nature,
go to beautiful places,
keep an extremely positive vocabulary
surround yourself with positive people
**avoid stress or stressful people any chance you get***
rid yourself of ANY toxic relationships...family, romantic...it doesn't matter!
***drink aloe vera juice daily***(very calming and heals inside as well as out!)
think happy, positive thoughts straight through...
have faith in yourself
trust God**********
Porkchop is so right, don't watch the news!

Why rule out medication?
Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Medication can help relieve the symptoms while treatment in the form of therapy takes place.

i go to nursing school and just recently learned about psychiatric moods... even though drugs may be the best way to prevent depression, go see your doctor and he will may be refer you to a psychiatrist, also try not to stay by yourself at all times... make sure that family and friends are always by your side so that you can talk to them about what you feel... but honestly, the best way is to take anti-depressants, but still ask your physician... hope i helped...

wow! what an honest person!

Talking to somebody always helps...You can talk to me if you dont have a close friend, I'll listen. Get a pet, that helps. Good Luck and Take care. ;)

Without drugs it's almost impossible to deal with severe depression dear.

I was always against drugs for depression, I used to believe I could deal with depressions jst by hanging in there , keeping my head up and all that but as time went by , the depressions became worse every time and now I know I need drugs..I cannot survive without them, if i dont take them then I fail my school year, mutilate myself and all that. It's sad to say but you cannot beat severe depression by yourself or with the help of others...I wish I could
Good luck
