How can I overcome alcohol addiction?!

Question: I've had a drinking problem since I was a teen. I have found it really hard to abstain. When I was on antabuse, I made it 100 days without drinking. 2 weeks after I got off the antabuse, I fell off the wagon hardcore...
I'm not a daily drinker, but a big binge drinker. I'm sure I've had alcohol poisoning more than once... It's gonna kill me someday if I don't stop.

Anyone have any suggestions for quitting?

There is one good thing to try... Change your life! everything that goes with it, including the booze!
Try a new beggining with new job, new house, new surroundings! and try some new hobbies that is going to take your mind off the drink.
Or go traveling for sometime! and worry about other things apart from the drink.

Good Luck to you anyway, Happy New Year & dont touch that drink! lol

call nhs or aa

stay away from your friends who drink while they are drinking.

Alcoholics Anonymous . . . and get a really good sponsor.

cold turkey

The World Health Organization and the American Medical Association have defined drug and alcohol addiction as a medical disease...just like cancer, or diabetes. It's a complex mental illness that has complex family/social dynamics. The whole "family system" will need treatment. The most effective treatment known to date is AA 12-step type meetings for the alcoholic/addict AND simultaneous Al-anon meetings and "step-work" for the family members...including other siblings. There is Ala-teen for teen siblings.

This is really a wonderful program that has helped many, many, many families who suffer from the same types of proplems that alcohol and drug abuse brings into families. I encourage you to check their website, and then call to get a list of current local meetings in your area. At your first local meeting you can get a written schedule of all the many local meetings in your area. Also, you can ask for a "sponsor" to get specific guidance from 1 person you can call and can get guidance from regarding how the program works and how it can help you out. Since different meetings/groups will have slightly different dynamics and a different "feel", it is recommended that you try several different groups in your local area to find 1 or more that "feel" good/right for you.

Good luck and god bless.

P.s. AA meetings and Al-anon meetings are FREE!!! They are self-supporting and rely only on donations by passing the basket. Usually $1 or $2 is enough of a donation per meeting and you are asked not to donate at all for your first 3 meetings.

Can't you ask your doctor for Antabuse again, if it works for you? Ask about Campral, too, I was on that for 12 months after I stopped drinking, it's supposed to help with the cravings. Good luck.

O.K I know this will get me a violation but I found that cannibis
use helps as you can feel elation & enjoy soft drinks more, you
don't have to smoke it

Knowing that you have a drink problem is the first step into recovery... all you have to do now is ACCEPT it and do something about it by not taking the first drink !

Just because you are not a daily drinker does not stop you from being an alcoholic, its what it does to you and not the amount you drink.

Here's a suggestion, go to AA, they are people that know how you feel and have been there and done it all.
If you've been on antabuse then I reaaly think you need help...Make 2008 a sober one !

from one sweetie to another please stop looking in the bottom of a bottle for the answer. We can do this together I like a drink or maybe the drink likes me we can both stop. Your half where there because your seeking answers have a happy new less drinking 2008 fingers crossed.Stay happy x

Dont take the drug...one problem to another..no....To change is to change the heart first.beat and for sure therapy JESUS

AA. It is a life saver, it will help you to understand who you are and as a bonus you get to start growing as a spiritual person (it's not about religion at AA).
The 12 steps are not an easy road to begin with but you will see that you can be abstinent AND happy at the same time.
And you can forget about 'controlled drinking', if you are an escape artist like me then you know that there is no such animal.

hi, I've been sober now for just over 6 months after several failed attempts. one thing that i am sure of is that it is extremely difficult to do it alone. i attended an alcohol treatment centre (free of and charge) and and still attending, it is funded by the state.

i drank every day for over 15 years and alcohol robbed me of a big piece of my life.. I'm learning to live again ..

get help, don't try to go it alone
good luck

I've been married to an alcoholic for 22 years and he has recently celebrated 1 year of sobriety. Like you he was a binge drinker and it got to the piont where he had to fall and reach rock bottom before he got help. We had done multiple attempts at rehab. For some once was all that they needed for others it can be endless. Keep yourself focused. allow yourself to be in control not the alcohol. This is a long and difficult road one I'm still praying continues to lengthen and one i know if you want it can find it in yourself to reach.

it takes some guts to write your question...l admire you for that...l think that means you are there....slow down is the key...actually l would not'quit'...just be a control freak....self disciple..and self esteem....but you are allowed some fun....
