What anti-depressants can you buy from a store or pharmacy? and do you have to b!

Question: There are several otc substances that can help mood. St John's wort seems to work for many. SAM-E, food supplement has been found to be a quite effective antidepressant for many folks. Methylcobalamin acts as an antidepressant for those whose depression is caused by b12 deficiency and is a common symtom of such deficiency. B-complex can also make a huge difference in mood if one is deficient of some of them.

All these items can be purchased from a store or pharmacy. I would suggest that you try the methylb12 with b-complex first as it would actually be the cure if the cause is deficiency of any of these vitamins.

they have to be prescribed
u cant buy them at the store

please consult a doctor
they have many side effects

U dont need anti-depressants...once u start u never stop. try working out it get your good jucies going with out drugs.

You need to go see a licensed physician. Many anti-depressants aren't approved for people under 18, but most doctors prescribe them anyway if they feel it safe.

Sophia G has got it right.

You can't buy them over the counter -- they're a controlled substance.

you have to have a prescription, the only "anti-depressant" substance out there is St. John's Wort. It is an herb.

As for the age thing I don't know. But if you see a doctor and believe that you need to be on medication, you better have some sort of insurance because many are pretty expensive. If you feel you are depressed see your doctor, and let him/her decide if you need them.

None. You have to see a doctor.

There are no anti-depressants that are available without a prescription. St. John's Wort, a herb commonly used to treat depressive symptoms, is available over-the-counter. Before running out and getting yourself some St. John's Wort it is important to know that herbal treatments may be "natural" but they can also have extremely serious side-effects. For example, in individuals who take SJW in an attempt to alleviate what seems to be a depression but is actually the depressive phase of Bipolar Disorder, a serious manic episode can be precipitated. Another concern is that SJW can interact with other medications.

I'm guessing from the fact that you asked whether one needs to be a certain age to obtain OTC anti-depressants, if available, that you are under the age of 18. I really think your mental health is not something that you should be messing around with on your own. If you don't feel able to talk to your parents about what's going on, maybe there is another adult that you like and trust enough to ask for some help? Otherwise I would recommend contacting either a crisis line for young people in your area (you can probably find one by looking in your local phone book) or an on-line support service (such as the Samaritans--http://www.samaritans.org).

I hope my answer helps you out.
