just a chemical imbalance in your brain.

Lack of serotonine absorption or production

There is no main cause.
Many times, its social, family, or personal problems.
I believe its many times because the person is unable to deal with their problem(s), and over time, it becomes depression, and destroys their life, throwing them deeper into depression.

I think there are a lot of possible causes--I'll let someone more experienced answer that, but taking Omega 3s can help alleviate the symptoms.

Yes, a chemical imbalance. It was explained to me that there is a chemical in your brain that helps you cope with things like stress and when you have a lot of stress all at one time this chemical depletes and you are less and less able to cope and the smallest things will push you over the edge. This is only one scenario. There is also seasonal depression when people become down when their environment is cold and dead, like in the winter for example. I think that is why a lot of people head for warmer climates during the winter. "Soak up some sun" is a realistic statement because the sun has vitamins that your body needs and can actually make you feel better. There are so many contributors to depression but from what I've learned, it always comes down to the chemical imbalance, just different ways to get to that imbalance. Just remember, depression is not just being sad or something you can just "get over". It's a disease that needs to be treated and for me, anti-depression medication was a life saver.

Well after years of research I have found the most common reasons for depression are:

Sudden death of a close relative

Breakups

Divorce

Abusive Past

Sexual Abuse

Unstable Relationships

The good news is that these causes of depression can be tackled if you know how to tackle them....

COMMON CAUSES;
-Severe upheaval, prolonged stress e.g.,death of love one, bankruptcy, chronic illness..
-Certain physical illnesses e.g.,psoriasis,shingles,stroke,viral infections
-Hormonal imbalance e.g.,premenstrual,postnatal and menopausal periods
-Certain medicines e.g., sleeping medicines, oral contraceptives.
-Weak,unstable, or absent relationships e.g., poor parent-child relationship.
-Biochemical imbalance in the brain
