Because of history - in years gone by, soldiers and militia would carry their spears pointing to the left. If you were passing an oncoming group of these, you certainly wouldn't want to walk into their spears. You kept to the left side of the road to avoid them.
my boyf asked this when he first came here - but now that he drives here he says it's better than the oher way (as is practice in his native country) as he is right handed! It means that you can steer and change gear without drifting into the middle of the road.
