How do YOU deal with depression?!

Question: I am a 23 year old female. My family has a history of depression and unfortunately I suffer from depression too. I was taking a heavy dose of 60mg of Fluoxetine (Prozac) per day. It worked for a while, but for certain personal reasons I discontinued my perscription. I have tried other anti-depressants but would prefer to try and be happy without taking a pill everyday.
Currently I am going through tough times and am not working which I know GREATLY affects how I feel about myself. I have learned how to cope but am just wondering what are some other methods everyone else uses to

1) keep a positive attitude
2) not get frustrated
3) not get discouraged or feel down on yourself
4) keep everything in order and not feel overwhelmed with little day to day tasks

Other than not being employeed I am living at home and I really would just like obtain a job which can pay enough to live decently in Sonoma County on my own without relying on anyone.
Any advice is welcome! THANKS!

Take Wellbutrin. It a good anti depression medication. It works well, and has very good side effects.
Talk about your problems with a good friend or counselor. It's a lot better to get them out in the open, and you'll get good feedback on how to handle them better.

i had a nasty job that paid well which took a toll on my mental state. i went thru lots of meds and felt guilty about it, but if i tried to stop taking them, i'd get worse. now i'm unemployed and off the meds and i feel great. in my case i just lost the stressor. you're only 23, try not to feel too bad about not making it on your own yet, but make it a goal. smile a lot to make others feel good, it could help you feel better. do a little extra around the home to ease any guilty feelings and good luck. i starred this to check out the remedies above..

60 mg is a pretty healthy dose. anything over 20mg makes me to goofy. and anyway after time antidepressants lose their affect. so you will have to play the pill. once youre system is totally clear of the drug, one day stuffing a 60mg . in will just mess you up.

to be honest i think everyone suffers from some sort of depression, in some cases i think people use it for a crutch, i cant function i cant take care of myself, kids, house, car, job, friends, you name it people have excuses for everything but most often its the im depressed, im bipolar . i know some people do actually suffer from these, but since the medical community makes it so easy for just about anyone to claim "im a manic depressive or im bipolar can you give me a pill?at some point people start to think everyone who "suffers" is full of crap. lifes hard ,yep, deal with it dont dwell on the things you cant change, change what you can ,yourself, your enviroment, your friends theres alot you can change, but theres so much more you cant , have you ever met a truly depressed kid ? i mean someone who has no worries ,bills kids, career . who's only concern is if they'll get the wii. thats why since its hard to call a kid depressed, we'll say he has a-d-d or a-d-h-d lets label them with something then give them a pill. good luck to you just always remember " IT COULD ALWAYS BE WORSE!"

As I see it, you can approach this issue on several fronts.
Chemically, your blood and body chemicals may be out of whack from your environment, stress levels, the foods you eat, any drugs you're taking, and your thoughts and reactions to your present situation.
So you could look at the foods you are eating, the stressors in your life, any medications you are on, your environment, etc and see if you can make any connections there.

I also think that having a social network is CRUCIAL for good mental health. You need to have friends (or at least one really good one), a job you can tolerate(or actually enjoy), a therapist or counselor, hobbies for fun, and a romantic partner.

I also suggest doing some fitness activities or some sport that you enjoy to get your heart rate up and your muscles into good shape.

I suggest doing some exercises that get the legs moving, such as walking, jogging, running, swimming or bike riding.
These exercises that really get your heart pumping will burn the weight off quickly.

I like push ups, yoga stretches, pull ups, crunches, curl ups, leg stretches, calf raises, and squats as far as being good toning exercises that use no equipment and cost zero money to perform.

I like taking some dumbbells and doing some easy bicep curls, military presses, and lateral raises.

I think diet is important also and try to eat healthy home-cooked meals with lots of vegetables in them.

I try to stay away from the pop and sugar, candy, and fast food.

I try to get a good night's sleep each night.

sometimes you have no choice but to take themeds...i would prefer not to either but its not a choice..i can no longer work...but i try and keep myself busy...doing interesting things...

i dont know how you are going to take it but one thing for sure it has worked for me.Depression is caused by an insecurity feeling be of what happened in the past or wrong anticipation of the future.Depression is a strong feeling that absorbs one`s strength, energy and zeal.I have gone through it and the medication process possibly more than you have.My life changed when i became a christian.I know you may not want to hear this,or its the last thing you expectd to hear but beilive me lady it works.
Im saying this from exprience not from an evangelistic point of view.I have discovered that the moment i started trusting God with my life i was amazed at how much power resonated in me to fight depression, stress etc.I have been a christian for almost 6years but one thing i can testify that changed is in the area of depression, stress, hypertension etc.
So my advise is, why not try to get serious with your creator because obviously he did not create you to be miserable.Taking medication is juss a temporary measure but if you want a pearmanent solution to this problem......God is saying "come my daughter for you are weary and heavy laden and i will give you rest."God bless you.
